Baroness Barker - Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for the Voluntary Sector - has criticised the Charity Commission in relation to the Oxfam scandal:
“One might have expected the Charity Commission to know that a charity’s most valuable asset is its reputation...
and to understand that, whilst Oxfam reported that it was dealing with the matter, the organisation might have been advised by lawyers to keep public statements to a minimum.
“The events for which Oxfam is now being berated coincided with a period when the Charity Commission’s funding was greatly reduced”.
Baroness Barker added that the Commission’s Chair at the time, William Shawcross, knew nothing about charities or regulation.
He did however know how to please the politicians who appointed him: by making sweeping statements about charities which were full of criticism but lacking in evidence.
Speaking about the Commission’s latest Chair post, take a look at our blog post on the topic of Baroness Stowell. The Baroness is another person apparently short on charity experience, knowledge and vision according to the Committee for Digital, Media, Culture and Sport. Sounds like another perfect fit, doesn’t it!
