A True Vocation

We think, how strange it is that salaries in charities and nonprofits are a big issue.
There are a lot of similarities between charity CEOs and charity founders on the one hand, and on the other, people in a whole raft of occupations which are generally considered to be vocations - intended to make something in our society better in some way. Such as…
Doctors. Nurses. Teachers. Social workers. To name but a few.
All these occupations are usually accompanied by remuneration.
We can’t remember it being suggested that nurses or teachers should work for free. Yet, it is not uncommon for it to be suggested that charities should be staffed only by volunteers, as if doing good doesn’t deserve reward.
The difference is that charities generally receive voluntary donations from the public, whereas doctors, nurses, teachers and social workers are paid out of funds which are INVOLUNTARY donations - otherwise known as taxes.
Isn’t it curious how society works?
Or doesn’t?
Is the Charity Commission run by well-meaning volunteers? Oh, no! We think not. In fact, we know not.
