Ann Rowe of the SCVO is annoyed because Baroness Stowell, new Chair of the Charity Commission said in her first major speech the public don’t trust charities.
We’re annoyed, too. However, we’re not at all surprised.
So why would the Chair of the Charity Commission apparently be setting out to reduce trust and confidence in charities?
And why does Baroness Stowell ["ChariTina - we do like that name of hers!] keep reminding people about bad things that are done by people who work for charities.
Figured it out yet? CLUE: it’s not just her. William Shawcross, previous Chair, was also fond of doing a hatchet job on the sector.
As Ann Rowe puts it with regard to Stowell’s recent axe wielding session:
Words matter, and those are damaging words…
Trust is not a stick to beat charities with. It’s a carrot that should be dangled. The reward for a job well done and a charity well run. The ultimate prize. But she chose the stick. Not very motivational, and sadly another ‘good headline’ about how ‘bad’ charities are.
There’s also the small matter of the truth.
Indeed.
The reason is simple, we believe.
More on this subject will follow, in another post.
